About the Proposal
The Northern Ethanol proposal will be one of the largest Ethanol plants in Ontario and North America. It is to be built at 1 Big Bay Point, the old Molson Brewery. It is the intention of Northern Ethanol to demolish the existing building and build an Ethanol plant that will
  • Produce 408 million litres of ethanol per year
  • Generate 24,090 rail cars per year (33/day in, 33/day out, 7 days per week)
  • Generate 22,460 trucks per year (36/day in, 36/day out, 6 days per week)
  • Use 1.44 million imperial gallons/day, 2.39 billion litres of water (peak usage)
  • Create only 40 – 50 jobs for 35 acres
The Ethanol refinery will be a significant user of Barrie’s resources and will have a significant impact on the environment and community
  • The refinery will require 1.3 million imperial Gallons of water per day, 2.15 Billion litres per year (average usage), equivalent to 17% of the water taken in 2006 by all users in the City of Barrie combined
  • The refinery will emit
  • Process Water 3500 L/minute, which includes Plume that has 30 chemicals including carcinogens
  • Utility Water – 600 L/Min
  • Odour – all ethanol plants emit odour through process & spoilage
  • Dust from grain handling & road and rail transportation
  • Noise from trains, trucks and hammer mills
